An Introduction To Eye Surgery Procedures

While you’ve probably heard about laser eye surgery procedures like LASIK (see below), over the years there have been many different eye surgery procedures used to help us see better. Here is a brief introduction to a few of them.

Laser Eye Surgery

With laser eye surgery a thin and highly focused laser beam is used to remove (ablate in technical terms) tiny pieces off of the cornea. This procedure reshapes your cornea which improves your ability to focus. A few examples of this type of surgery are LASIK, LASEK, Intralense, PRK and the new No Touch.

LASIK Eye Surgery

LASIK is the medical acronym for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) [ed. See, didn’t I tell you! :) ] and
involves using a very thin knife (called a microkeratome) to cut a thin flap in the outer and middle layers of your cornea and then using a special laser (called an eximer laser) to remove tissue from your cornea. The LASIK procedure can be used to correct astigmatisms, myopia (near-sightedness) and hyperopia (far-sightedness).
